Toongabbie is a suburb located in Greater Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, approximately 35 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Parramatta. The suburb consists mainly of residential housing with some commercial and industrial areas.

Toongabbie is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning “place by the water or the meeting of the waters.” It was named in June 1792 after Governor Arthur Phillip had asked the local Aboriginal people what they called the place.

The area was originally inhabited by the Tugagal clan of the Darug people, who were subsequently displaced by British settlers. The first European settler in Toongabbie was convict James Ruse, who was granted land in the area in 1791. European settlement began in 1788, and Toongabbie soon became a critical farming district.

They established a farm called Toongabbie at the junction of Toongabbie Creek and Prospect Creek. In 1804, a road was built from Parramatta to Penrith, passing through Toongabbie, making it easier for people to settle in the area, and soon a small village had developed. A school was established in 1814, and a church in 1821.

The construction of the Great Western Railway in 1856 led to further growth and development in the area.

Today Toongabbie is a thriving residential suburb with a diverse population. It offers residents a convenient lifestyle with all the amenities of city living while still maintaining a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Many parks and reserves are scattered throughout Toongabbie, providing residents with ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

The suburb also has many historical landmarks, including Ruse House (the oldest surviving house in Australia) and Toongabbie Heritage Park.
